Rwanda

Country Overview

Rwanda has emerged as Africa’s most sophisticated conservation success story, offering an intimate and highly regulated encounter with some of the world’s rarest primates. Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” the country’s dramatic verticality and verdant terrain provide a striking contrast to the flat savannas of neighboring East Africa. Our bespoke itineraries focus on the high-altitude cloud forests and pristine lakes that define this emerald heart of the continent.

We specialize in high-impact, low-volume tourism. By limiting access to sensitive habitats like Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda ensures that every encounter with the mountain gorillas is exclusive and sustainable. This commitment to conservation-led luxury provides our guests with a profound sense of purpose and unparalleled access to the front lines of wildlife protection.

FAQ: Safaris in Rwanda

How physically demanding is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Gorilla trekking involves hiking through steep, often muddy terrain at altitudes ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 meters. The duration can vary from two to eight hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. We recommend a baseline level of fitness, but we also arrange for porters and “sedan chairs” to assist those with limited mobility.
Rwanda offers the most streamlined and luxury-oriented trekking infrastructure in Africa. The transit from the international airport to the park is just three hours on paved roads, and the luxury lodges are located directly on the park boundaries. The permits are more exclusive, ensuring a high-tier, well-managed experience.
Rwanda is consistently ranked as one of the safest and cleanest countries in the world. The tourism industry is a national priority, and the security presence in and around the national parks is world-class. You can expect a high degree of professionalism, stability, and safety throughout your journey.
Absolutely. Many of our guests combine gorilla trekking in Rwanda with a Big Five safari in the Masai Mara or Serengeti. We arrange seamless private charters that connect Kigali directly to the airstrips of East Africa’s premier savanna camps, allowing for a diverse “Apes and Plains” itinerary.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is 15 years. This is strictly enforced to protect the primates from childhood diseases and to ensure the safety of the participants during potentially long treks. However, we can arrange alternative nature walks and cultural activities for younger children.
Layering is essential. You need long, breathable trousers and long-sleeved shirts to protect against stinging nettles and insects. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support are mandatory. We also recommend gardening gloves to help you grip branches and vines during the steep ascent.
To minimize the impact on the gorilla families, each trekking group is strictly limited to eight guests per day. This ensures an intimate experience and allows your guide to provide detailed information and photographic assistance without the crowding found in other wildlife destinations.
We manage the entire permit acquisition process as part of your bespoke itinerary. Because permits are limited and in high demand, we recommend booking at least six months in advance to secure your preferred dates and gorilla family groups.
