Uganda

Country Overview

Uganda serves as the geographical transition point where East African savannas meet the West African rainforests, resulting in a level of biodiversity that is unparalleled in the region. Known as the “Pearl of Africa,” the country offers a raw and authentic wilderness experience that caters to those seeking a deeper connection to nature. Our bespoke itineraries focus on the misty heights of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the powerful surge of the Nile at Murchison Falls, ensuring a diverse and high-impact journey.

We prioritize exclusivity in remote territories. By selecting luxury lodges situated on the edge of protected ecosystems, we provide a base for intimate wildlife encounters that are both sustainable and profoundly moving. Uganda’s varied terrain allows for a unique “Primate and Plains” combination, where you can track mountain gorillas in the morning and observe tree-climbing lions in the afternoon.

FAQ: Safaris in Uganda

How does gorilla trekking in Uganda compare to Rwanda?
Uganda offers a more rugged and adventurous trekking experience. The terrain in Bwindi is often steeper and more densely forested than in Rwanda, but the permits are more competitively priced. Uganda also allows you to combine your trek with a traditional Big Five safari and Nile boat excursions, providing a more diverse overall itinerary.
Gorilla trekking requires a moderate to high level of fitness. You may be hiking for two to seven hours through steep, muddy, and thick vegetation at altitudes above 2,000 meters. We recommend preparing with cardiovascular exercise and can arrange for local porters to assist with your daypack and provide support on the trails.
Yes, Uganda is a stable and welcoming country with a long history of international tourism. We utilize private transfers, secure luxury lodges, and professional guides who prioritize your safety throughout the journey. The national parks are well-patrolled by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, ensuring a secure environment for all visitors.
While Uganda is primarily famous for its primates, you can see four of the Big Five in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. To complete the set, we often include a visit to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you can track white rhinoceros on foot as part of a successful reintroduction program.
To avoid long road transfers on winding mountain roads, we utilize a network of light aircraft bush flights. These flights connect Entebbe directly to the various park airstrips, maximizing your time in the field and offering spectacular views of the Rift Valley and the Rwenzori Mountains.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga is 15 years. This rule is strictly enforced to protect the gorillas from childhood diseases and to ensure that all participants are physically capable of handling the demands of the trek. Alternative forest walks and cultural visits are available for younger children.
You need versatile clothing for both the hot savanna and the cool, damp rainforest. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip are vital for trekking. Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts are required to protect against stinging nettles, and a lightweight rain jacket is essential as showers can occur at any time
We manage the entire permit acquisition process as part of your bespoke journey. Because permits are limited to eight people per gorilla family per day, they are in high demand. We recommend booking at least six to nine months in advance to ensure availability for your preferred dates.
